What is Ayurveda?
In this week's episode of "Billable-Hour Burnout", we're diving into Ayurveda and how it can help you find balance and ease in your professional life. Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old science from India, focuses on the balance of life (Ayur) and knowledge (Veda). It encompasses four essential aspects:
Body
Mind
Soul
Five Senses
By balancing these elements, Ayurveda aims to achieve alignment, known as Swasta in Sanskrit.
The Five Elements
Ayurveda identifies the five primordial elements:
Earth
Water
Fire
Air
Ether
These elements combine into three doshas:
Vata (Ether and Air)
Pitta (Fire and Water)
Kapha (Water and Earth)
We each have a unique balance of these doshas, influencing our physical and mental constitution.
Why does this matter as professionals in accounting, law, or consulting? Because we each have certain factors that contribute to our health and well-being, and imbalance that can manifest when we exhibit stress.
The ancient Ayurveda literature doesn't speak to the word "stress" itself, but considering Ayurveda translates as "The science of longevity", we can glean much wisdom from what ancient knowledge says about our modern work culture.

Today's topic is Ayurveda. Think of it as traditional Chinese medicine from India. Ayurveda is a 3,500- to 5,000-year-old science focusing on life and longevity. It comprises body, mind, soul, and the five senses, aiming for alignment, or "swasta."
Ayurveda includes the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether (space). These elements exist in everything, including us, and are categorized into three doshas: Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth). Everyone has a unique balance of these doshas.
Why should a modern woman care about Ayurveda? It helps recover from burnout by balancing our energy, health, and sleep. It reduces stress and improves concentration, productivity, and emotional balance. Ayurveda provides personalized solutions for individual needs, helping you feel better in body, mind, soul, and senses.
Understanding your dosha helps you identify what foods and habits balance you. This knowledge can reduce stress and improve your life. When I ended up in the emergency room, Ayurveda helped me understand the patterns causing my stress and how to address them.
Ayurveda teaches you how to feel better without a one-size-fits-all approach. It's customized to your life, location, and needs. This is the essence of my coaching program, Freedom, which helps clients overcome burnout.
