Ep #29: From Burnout to Breakthrough: Why Throwing in the Towel Isn't the Answer

throwing in the towel

If you've ever found yourself at a crossroads in your career, wondering whether to stay or go, this article is for you. Many of you shared how much you loved my last testimonial video, The Promotion Story. Therefore, I wanted to share another.

Kristi's Journey: 20 Years In and Ready to Quit

Let's talk about Kristi, a consulting partner at a Big Four firm. Kristi is a mother of three, a loving wife, and after 20 years in her career, she was seriously considering throwing in the towel.

Many of you might relate to Kristi's situation. You've invested years in your career, climbed the ladder, and yet find yourself questioning if it's all worth it. The temptation to quit can be overwhelming. Here's the thing: sometimes, the way through isn't abandoning ship. It's about finding a new way to navigate the waters you're in.

Kristi's story (which I shared in detail in the video portion of the episode) is a powerful testament to what can happen when you raise your hand and ask for help instead of giving up. She found a way to reclaim her career satisfaction without having to start over somewhere new.

The Power of Raising Your Hand vs. Throwing in the Towel

throwing in the towel

Kristi's story highlights a crucial point: it's okay to ask for help. In fact, it's more than okay—it's essential for your professional growth and personal well-being.

As we wrap up suicide prevention month, I want to emphasize how important it is to reach out when things get tough. You don't have to figure everything out on your own. Whether it's burnout, career dissatisfaction, or any other professional challenge, there are people and resources available to help you navigate through it.

Wrapping Up

Remember, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Sometimes, the most significant growth and satisfaction come from working through challenges where you are. Before you decide to quit, consider whether there might be untapped potential in your current situation.

Hi everyone, welcome. Happy Wednesday. Happy Billable Hour Burnout. We're here for another good one.

Today I'm doing an episode based on what I've gotten from you. So many requests. A few weeks ago, maybe a month or two ago at this point, I did a client success story about one of my clients, sharing a video interview between she and I about her promotion. Now, so many of you loved it. I got a lot of great feedback on it, and so I wanted to do it again. I'm sharing another interview from one of my clients who came to me saying, "Should I stay or should I go?" A woman who spent 20 years in her career and decided at that point, "I'm about to throw it away."

But first, let me welcome you to the show. Welcome to Billable Hour Burnout. If you need helpful tactical advice that's going to help give you the career of your dreams without the stress of the overwhelm, you are in the right place. If you want to finally enjoy the life that you've spent decades building, you've come to the right place. If you find yourself here today, it means you're ready to experience more balance, more ease, more confidence, and you're ready to make it happen without having to quit your job or burn down your life.

Hey everybody, I'm Lauren Baptiste, your Big Four auditor, CPA turned life coach. And this is Billable Hour Burnout. On the show, I'm sharing simple tactical advice, mindset strategies specifically catered to the professional in accounting, law, consulting, and finance. You ready? Let's do it.

What's going on? Episode 29. Next week is 30. So I'm really... Well, we're not having... Actually, I'll tell you this now. We're not having an episode next week because I'm going to be at a conference. But I was just at a conference and I wanted to recap. So I know last week I did the recap, the three lessons learned from my experience at iWin, and it was really just such a lovely experience.

I'm really excited. This is that time of year where I am on my speaking tour. I call it my speaking tour. I actually went to one of my first concerts in a long time and I saw Creed and they did this like '99 reunion thing and it was pretty fun, but that was a last-minute thing. So just giving you a little update about me.

But one of the things that I had after that conference is a mini business epiphany. There's this term that they kept using that said, "Let's use the next two days to plan the next two years." And I was like, you know what? I'm in. I'm going to do that. And so I have some exciting things that I thought of that are germinating, and that will be coming for you. So I'm super pumped about that.

But for now, let's just go into the rest of the world of what's happening. Let me give you my usual breakdown of today's episode. So we'll go into our client success story, followed by our value in our content, which is going to be today's interview. And then I have some fun things to tell you before we wrap up.

Now, if you're seeing me on Instagram, you're seeing me at a weird angle because I'm going to be flipping the screen. But let's start with the client success story first. And this one comes from my client, Diana. She was a senior, or she is a senior manager, and she came to me with pretty tough burnout, a really tough, people-pleasing manager or partner that she worked for. And what happens when we work for a people pleaser is it can feel really hard, right? It's one thing if we are the people pleaser as Type A's. A lot of us are that person. But what was happening is her boss was creating a really tough scenario for her.

So let me just read her testimonial. She said, "The best takeaway I got from Lauren was learning that I can't control everything, especially how others treat me. But I can control how I react. This perspective shift helped me conserve my energy and prevent negativity from further draining me at a time when I was experiencing significant work burnout. Even when I had setbacks, Lauren's guidance brought me back to a positive mindset, reminding me of my worth. Despite occasional doubts, Lauren's advice to focus, step back, and manage my mind has been invaluable. I've learned to accept the ups and downs in my career, in life, and not let the downs drag me down too much. This progress has been crucial in managing stress in a professionally challenging time and still maintaining a positive outlook."

So giving a shout out to Diana because she went from a place of extreme burnout, or chronic burnout, if you might have heard me use the term before. And she was working her way out of her burnout by the time she graduated from the program. So celebrating Diana and her continued growth.

All right, so let's go into it. Today, I want to talk to you about one of the clients I just really enjoyed working with. Her name is Christy. She is a consulting partner at a Big Four consulting firm, or what I like to say, a Big Four accounting firm. Like where I came from, she was a partner, she's a mother of three, loving wife, and she raised her hand because she was thinking about throwing in the towel. Now, I want to show this to you because so many of you come to me saying, "Should I stay or should I go?" Or "I think I'm going to quit my job, what should I do?" And I wanted to share her story and her success with you because so many of you believe that the way through is to abandon ship. And I want you to see something a little bit different.

Ah, such a good story. I am celebrating Christy over and over and over again. Give me some hearts and love for her being brave and vulnerable, for sharing her story, for raising her hand. Right? I know we're in October, but we just wrapped up suicide prevention month, and that's the work, man. Right? It's raising our hand when things get tough and being like, I don't have to figure this out on my own. So just loving her story, appreciating her vulnerability and raising her hand.

So that's today's episode. But I actually wanted to let you in on a little secret because I have some special things coming down the pike.
